Does body building harm self esteem?
I’ve been working out for ten years (natural bodybuilding with NO steroids). But in two periods where I’ve stopped working out, I’ve felt more relaxed and had better confidence.
Is this psychological? I notice when I’m pumping iron I’m looking at myself in the mirror and judging myself. Or is it physical? I always have low blood pressure at a result of being over fit, which often leaves me foggy and drowsy!
I wondered what your thoughts are?
dint get me wrong, I will always keep fit with hill running and daily press ups, but i’m no longer sure about hitting the iron 3 nights a week any more
I believe that it does, you feel good when you work out then when you stop you start to feel lazy and like a failure, or like you said the other way round. You can’t win. If i were you i’d cut down on the excercising it’s not the end of the world if you aren’t at your best all of the time just relax and be happy.

I would have thought the opposite, that being healthy and in shape should improve your self esteem.

Do you enjoy what you do?
Although you have been doing it for so long, mentally you might have just got used to it being something you have to do, whether you like it or not (a good example is school in kids, they hate it but gradually accept they have to do it, this could be the same with your body and exercise.)
Think to yourself, and be honest with yourself, "Do I actually enjoy what I do?" When your actually doing it do you enjoy it, like people do with football, for an example? This could be a possible explanation, being as the two periods when you have missed out you have felt better.
