Notice you get two separate answers, each of them reasonable, each of them supported with good arguments.
Folks, you can explain =why= the right answer is cells or is protein with good, solid, reasoning and explanations. But the only "correct" answer is the one the teacher wants to see written down on the homework paper or the test. Since our asker is probably not all that great at mind reading, he’s going to have to find it in his notes or in the text. I say this as an English teacher.
On the other hand, speaking as a biology major, I’ll answer this way: The basic building blocks of the body are the cells. The basic building blocks of the cells are proteins. RaMeZ has no way of knowing for certain whether either the teacher or the text is making this distinction.
I have too much experience with the way textbooks and teachers both can be ambiguous but expect you to read their minds. After all, they know what they meant, why don’t you? I say go with "cells" because the question does specify "of the body," but be aware that not everyone makes the distinction and it’s entirely possible the authors of your textbook think the basic building blocks of the body are proteins.
