You don't need supplements, just a balanced diet. Now, I personally take Genisoy (soy protein powder that I buy from Krogers). Be sure to eat something every 2 1/2 - 3 hrs. or at the very least 3 scoops of supplement w/soymilk.
By the way: soy increasing the estrogen levels in men is a lie.
Whey might sound like a good thing but it increases the production of phlegm in your system and if you never had allergies... you will know what they are like. And if you take whey proteing powder be ready to get a cold at the very least. Cow milk is the best thing for calves, not humans.
References :
I agree with Luke, Whey protein is the only thing I would recommend... that and a good diet (80% of your results come from your diet), I wouldn't even recommend creatine though... I used it for years and all it really did was bloat me.

I used supplements of every sort for years while busting my ass at the gym and getting very little results, it wasn't until I dropped all supplements and focused on my diet that I finally became what I wanted to be.

A good diet is all you need, and sometimes that means adding extra protein via whey.
References :
All I recommend is 100% Whey Protein. Its natural. If you are very serious try creatine.
References :
Me

protein supplements generally don't have alot of calories, but help build muscle. I personally don't use them, but i know alot of people who swear by them, especially creatin.
