The link between saturated fats and heart health is based on faulty science. Dietary fat, whether saturated or not, is not a cause of obesity, heart disease, or any other chronic disease of civilization. Through their direct effects on insulin and blood sugar, refined carbohydrates, starches and sugars are the dietary cause of coronary heart disease and diabetes.

Plaque build up in the arteries are more attributable to carb consumption than dietary fats, which seems to be the conclusion of the following study. Carb consumption raises triglycerides & VLDL (bad cholesterol). Fats raise the HDL (good cholesterol). High triglyceride levels & low HDL levels are an indicator of plaque, glycation – the precursors to a heart attack and heart disease.

study from the Oxford group examining the postprandial (after-eating) effects of a low-fat vs. low-carbohydrate diet. (Roberts R et al, 2008)

Postprandial lipoproteins, you’d think, would be plentiful after ingesting a large quantity of fat, since fat must be absorbed via chylomicrons into the bloodstream. But it’s carbohydrates that figure most prominently in determining the pattern and magnitude of postprandial triglycerides and lipoproteins. Much of this effect develops by way of de novo lipogenesis, the generation of new lipoproteins like VLDL after carbohydrate ingestion.

There seems to be confusion about saturated fats (and naturally occurring trans fats) falling into the same realm as man made chemically altered fats (trans fats from hydrogenated fats) which they usually alter saturated fats because they are stable and don’t become rancid the way unsaturated (vegetable oils) oils can.

There is a need to balance your Omega 6 oils equally with Omega 3 and with a diet that is so high in fat. I feel more comfortable with saturated fats. They are stable and don’t go rancid, they aren’t oxidized outside my body, I feel more comfortable with them not oxidizing inside my body.

Saturated fats may not be considered as yet an essential fat required for life but natural breast milk is 50% of it’s calories from fat & half of it is saturated fat (half saturated & half oleic acid) for infants (the fats in coconut oil & olive oil – surely nature can’t be too wrong). Coconut oil (the only oil close to duplicating breast milk and added to baby formula) has an extremely unique make up with it’s medium chained fatty acids and can be processed directly as energy in the liver in much the same manner as a carbohydrate.

The link between saturated fats and heart health is based on faulty science but very few are willing to contradict the long standing edict. Both cholesterol and saturated fat are essential for growth in babies and children, especially the development of the brain. Still, the American Heart Association recommends a low-cholesterol, lowfat diet for children & adults.

50% of dietary fats need to be from saturated fats for calcium to be effective in the bone structure. Saturated fats enhance the immune system & are important for good health.

Which Body building supplement to take from holland and barrets?

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

Just wondering what body building supplement i should take from holland and barretts and i currently take creatine capsules so what would go with that? Max price around £20

Creatine and protein are perfect for increasing muscle mass and strengthening muscles. You’ve got to make sure you work out quite often though otherwise you’ll increase in water mass.

PS avoid holland and barrett and find your local body building shop! The owner will be massive and ripped no doubt. Tell him how you want to look and he’ll give you good advice so you’ll go back to him in the future and buy more of his product. Also, you can haggle with them!

Muscle Building Feel Good Foods, Have You Got it Cracked?

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

What you ingest in your muscle building plan will not only assist you in developing your muscles but will also affect your mental well being.

The more cholesterol that a bodybuilder consumes, the better the muscle gain is – proven by a study conducted by Texas A&M University. The researchers of the study believe that the cholesterol from eggs aids muscle repair so that every resting period between workouts enables the muscles recover faster and grow stronger quicker. Specifically it is the yellow part of the egg, having high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (good cholesterol) that will assist you in your muscle building endeavors.

Hummus is high in protein and fibre, it provides a slow sustained release of energy into your blood stream and muscles helping you avoid blood sugar fluctuations. Snacking regularly on hummus topped rice cakes will give you a balanced mood and the determination to stick to your fitness plan.

Whilst oranges are well known for their vitamin properties, they also contain inositol. Inositol regulates and maintains the body’s insulin levels which will result in fewer mood swings and promotes a feeling of well being and peace. This fruit will also reduce blood cholesterol and breakdown the useless fats in your body which will assist in the development of your muscles.

Cauliflower is high in Vitamin C, which will give you a feeling of well being and feeds your muscles with energy boosting iron, be careful not to overcook all of the goodness out of your cauliflower or you will lose all of that muscle building goodness. Steam for a maximum of five minutes.

Butter beans contain dopamine which will give you a feeling of motivation and pleasure. Blend with a spoonful of mild mustard and some olive oil for a tasty dip.

Butternut squash is very high in zinc which promotes the healthy growth of nerve cells and fights depression. A great energy booster that is very tasty and easy to prepare. Peel, chop and roast just like a potato.

The liquorice root contains glycyrrhizin, often referred to as a natural steroid because it helps the body deal with stress. A bag of liquorice sweets can do wonders for your energy levels. Motivational sweets, what more could you ask for!

All of this doesn’t mean that sitting around scoffing liquorice and cauliflower omelets all day will give you huge muscles, the key is to maximize these feel good food tips with your muscle training.
