Why isn't extreme body building considered a mental disorder but anorexia and others is?

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Ever wonder this? Obviously anorexia nervosa is a recognized mental disorder that can lead to death. But, why isn't extreme bodybuilding? You know where men take steroids and looking so unaturally buff and extremely unhealthy. I mean obviously anorexia nervosa and exteme bodybuilding are caused by emotional, biological, and environmental factors. But I just don't understand why extreme body building isn't considered a mental disorder? Is it because you don't have a chance of dying, unlike anorexia?

It is. Its called bigorexia.

Obsessed with the Perfect Body: Bigorexia

Interestingly, both male bulimics and body builders seem to be equally over-concerned with weight and shape. Both feel that body shape is just as important as friends or work. Furthermore, distortions in thinking can be seen by the fact that body builders are just as unhappy with their bodies as non athlete male bulimics, which leads many to anabolic steroid use to get bigger, leaner, and more muscular. These men feel too small and want to increase the size of various upper body parts at any cost. It is no wonder that some have termed this obsession as "reverse anorexia," "bigorexia," or "muscle dysmorphia." Researchers believe that this is a form of body dysmorphic disorder, a disorder whereby a person feels they are physically flawed despite appearing perfectly normal. This may also be related to the condtion called obsessive-compulsive disorder, which is on the spectrum that includes bulimia nervosa.

How to substitute for protein in body building?

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

I am 19 years old and I live in Afghanistan. About 6 months ago, I got into body building. It is very hard to find protein shakes or protein whey here in Afghanistan, and even if you do, it is cheap quality. I have been body building for 6 months now, but I havent gained a lot. What kinds of food or drink has a high level of protein? How can I get sufficient protein for body building without having to buy protein shakes or protein whey?

Choosing A Body Building Routine

Thursday, March 26th, 2009

Too few people take the time to examine their choices. This is true for many aspects of our lives, including exercising. But it is important to occasionally take a step back to consider what your needs and goals are, and then reshape your reshaping efforts!

Making choices about the correct body building routine for your needs is probably the most important decision as far as your body building goes. Before you make any final decisions you need to examine some specifics about each body building routine you are considering.

Firstly, has this potential body building routine been tested, and if so how? How many people have tried this routine and what were their results? Did all of the folks who tried this body building routine see a big difference in their results? Were they disappointed or were they satisfied? Investigate these questions early and you will be way ahead of the body building game.

Ask what kinds of things each body building routine takes into consideration. A good body building routine will implement several different things such as the goals that you have set for yourself, and your training preferences and loads and when to change them. As well, your ongoing progress should be considered and the body building routine should also have decent recovery periods. These are all important components and if any body building routine does not incorporate these then it should not be considered. You want to do your exercises both the right way and the healthy way. Therefore, choose a body building routine that will give you everything that you need all in one program.

Each type of goal can be matched to a different body building routine. If you take the time to determine what you are after then you can choose a body building routine that will help you meet this goal in particular. Any good routine will make it clear from the beginning what it has to offer and how it will benefit you the most. There is a body building routine for people in their teens and for those who are middle aged or older. There are useful routines for women and men, and there are choices between body building routines for those who are going to be competing and those who are just having fun. Consider what you want to accomplish in advance, and then use that info to help you choose your body building routine. Don’t make the common mistake of adopting a routine style and then letting the routine determine your goals and success levels. Be in control by reversing that pattern and choosing your needs first, then matching them to the proper routine for you.

Bodybuilding Workouts for Maximum Muscle Gain

Monday, March 23rd, 2009

Exercise machines are a lot like the training side wheels on your first bike. While you’re learning, they serve an invaluable purpose. They provide support, and prevent injury. But once you’ve learnt the right posture and balance, the same wheels can be a drag.

Unlike training wheels, however, it’s tough to know when you’ve outgrown an exercise machine. And that can really hamper your progress down the line!

Weight training involves the use of equipment that enables variable resistance. This resistance can come in the form of ‘free weights’ like barbells and dumbbells, machines that use cables or pulleys to help you lift the weight and bodyweight exercises like pull-ups or dips.

For maximum muscle gain, the focus of your workouts should consist of free weight exercises. Not machines or bodyweight exercises.

To get an effective, muscle-blasting workout, you must stimulate the most muscle fibers as possible, and machines do not do this. The main reason for this is a lack of stabilizer and synergist muscle development. Stabilizer and synergist muscles are supporting muscles that assist the main muscle in performing a complex lift.

The more stabilizers and synergists worked, the more muscle fibers stimulated. Multi-jointed free weight exercises like the bench press, require many stabilizer and synergistic muscle assistance to complete the lift.

On the other hand doing a bench press using a machine will need almost no stabilizer assistance. Since machines are locked into a specific range of motion and help to support the weight along that path, they fail to stimulate the muscles that surround the area you are working (stabilizers). This is a mistake. If your stabilizer muscles are weak, then the major muscle group will never grow!

Free weight exercises like the dumbbell press or squat, for example, put a very large amount of stress on supporting muscle groups. That’s why you will get fatigued faster and not be able to lift as much weight as you did on the machine. But you will gain more muscle, become stronger very quickly and have a true gauge of your strength.

If you use machines in your program, they should be used to work isolated areas and only after all multi-jointed exercises have been completed. Beginners should begin with a limited combination of machine exercises, bodyweight exercises and mult-jointed free weight exercises. Before increasing the weight levels, they should work on becoming familiar with the proper form and execution of each. Soon, bodyweight exercises will become insufficient to stimulate growth and they will need to focus on more free weight exercises.

can i take creatine and wheyprotein at same time for body bulding ?

Tuesday, March 17th, 2009

Absolutely. You should use protein after each workout, and on days that you don’t work out to preserve muscle. Creatine is used on a loading basis (your system will adapt to it, and it’s advantage will decrease).

http://www.uoregon.edu/~mdillon1/Muscle%20Creatine%20Loading/Muscle%20Creatine%20Loading.html

Creatine will fill your muscles with water, making them bigger and able to load more weight. Mix creatine with grape juice to help your body quickly absorb it. It is recommend that you take them at the same time for optimum growth. Always use protein, even when you’ve completed the creatine cycle.

I am trying to teach my son (11 yrs old) the difference between natural body building and steroid use…?

Monday, March 16th, 2009

any one know where I can find some GOOD sites to compare the 2 different body types…those that take steroids and those that don't…He looks at John Cena as a hero and I'm trying to explain that these men and women are on drugs…(the whole Benoit thing didn't phase him) One of the reasons as to why I don't want him watching this crap is because he tries to pull these moves on him 4 year old brother and 10 year old step brother…and anyone else that walks in the house, including the dog…I am trying to explain to him that these guys aren't naturally big and didn't get big like that just working out..he tries convincing me that John Cena is no bigger than my husband!! I'm like…um…yeah he is! my husband has a naturally muscular physique, with a few years of working out…years…now these wrestlers go from 190 lb wimps to 310lb power houses in 6 months (exaggeration I know but not by much)..Any sites? I've already tried googling and got no where…Help???
is it too late to change that "him" to "his" 4 yr old brother….??? LOL…hit submit before I edited…
FYI…the point of this question isn't about body building…it's more of trying to get him to understand that the wrestling world that he so looks up to is actually fake and dangerous. And, I'm trying to do this first by showing him the difference in natural muscles and steroid use muscles…he thinks John Cena has the ideal body for a man…he doesn't understand that he's on steroids…he knows why steroids are bad but he sees these wrestlers as natural…so I need some sites that have pictures of both so I can show him the difference so he'll get off this pro-wresting kick and I can rest assured that he's not going to pull these moves on everyone and everything…I need to Unglorify this!!! And I don't know how!!

Been there done that. Trust me, when you're 11 years old no amount of talking will ever convince him that looking like this muscle head isn't desirable. it's all about testosterone. If you don't have it, you'll never understand. The only thing that you can do is monitor the the acting out of the wrestling because a person can get seriously injured doing this crap. I had a friend who is in a wheel chair today because his buddy thought it'd be cool to give him a suplex ! Being big and buff is a normal aspiration for a male of any age, get his father involved with him to do some exercising and have him do some reading on the subject. I'd say there is probably a library in the area that the whole family could go and spend some quality time at. After all, you said that your husband worked out for a few years. Odds are he probably knows a small amount about the subject. Good luck, let us know how it turns out .

which is the best suppliment for bodybulding ProtineX or whey proteins , does whey protein contain steroids??

Thursday, March 12th, 2009

whey is derived from milk. milk contains 2 types of protein whey and casein the combination is referred to as milk proteins.

gram for gram whey protein is probably cheaper than ProtineX, provides more protein per serving and is lower in calories
